Institutional and economic analysis of Apo Island Protected Landscape and Seascape Dauin, Negros Oriental, Philippines

This study assessed the sustainability of Apo Island Protected Landcape and Seascape [Dauin, Negros Oriental, Philippines] in the context of its ecological, institutional and economic dimensions, traced and analyzed its institutional development and management structure, described and examined its financial management mechanisms and current fee system and estimated the annual value of its catch as well as recreation benefits. The study revealed that overall, AIPLS has a high level of sustainability. However, taking into account specific factors, the study showed the need for better initiative on some aspects of managing the AIPLS in order to sustain and maintain the said ecosystem. The economic annual value of fish catch and recreation benefits was estimated employing productivity analysis and individual travel costmethod, respectively. The annual value of fish catch per fishes P5763.39, P6936.52 and P 6445.85 in 1998, 2000 and 2001, respectiv ely. On the other hand, the computed consumer surplus indicated that domestic tourists are willing to pay from P625.00 to P2941.18 to enjoy the island's natural resources and environmental amenities. To effectively maintain and sustain the AIPLS, the following are recommended: formulation of management plan, restructuring of the organizational set-up for AIPLS administration, streamlining of financial procedure and fund management, application of economic instruments and provision of livelihood opportunities to residents.
