Rooting variation in three provenances of Dao [Dracontomelon dao (Blco)Merr. and Ralfe]
2005
Aguilos, M.M.
This study involved an evolution of the rooting performance of Dao (Dracontomelon dao) taken from different provenances and treated with various concentrations of 3-indole butyric acid (IBA) in combination with Superthrive vitamins and propagated under mist and non-mist conditions. The propagation facilities of DENR [Department of Environment and Natural Resources] Caraga were used in this experiment. Seeds were collected from three sources namely: Valencia, Bukidnon Nabunturan, Davao del Norte and Buenavista, Agusan del Norte [Philippines]. The cuttings obtained from seedlings from the three provenances were soaked in four different IBA concentrations of 250 ppm, 500 ppm, 750 ppm and 1000 ppm added with 1 ml Superthrive vitamin-hormone. A control was prepared by soaking the cuttings in distilled water. Results showed that the misting system, provenance and the interaction between misting system and provenance significantly affected the surviva l and rooting percentage of dao cuttings. Mist system yielded 71.38% survival and 94.16% rooting performance while non-mist system obtained 39.44% and 90.14% survival and rooting performance, respectively. Bukidnon was found to be the most promising source of planting stock for dao followed by Agusan del Norte and Davao del Norte with a survival rate of 94.17%, 86.67% and 33.33%, respectively. The same trend was observed in rooting success of 100%, 95.19% and 75%, for the three provenances, respectively. Misting systems, provenance, level of hormones, interactions between misting system x provenance, provenance x level of hormones, and misting system x provenance x level of hormones have also affected the number of macroroots produced by the cuttings. The most number of macroroots were at 75 ppm IBA. The Bukidnon provenance had the most macroroots formed. As far as root length is concerned, the misting system, provenance ,different levels of hormones, and the interaction bet ween provenance x level of hormones significantly affected the root length of dao cuttings. Cuttings treated with 250 ppm IBA rooted inside the misting facility had the highest root length of 9.6183 cm. The Agusan del Norte provenance developed the longest roots. In terms of root oven dry weight,ANOVA showed significant differences in the misting system, provenance, and the interaction between misting system and provenance. In terms of level of hormone, the highest recorded biomass was in 750 ppm IBA (0.0792 g).
