The history of the coconut industry dates back to the 1600s. Main products produced were shell, husk, sap, copra and coconut oil (used primarily for caulking and rigging ships, as illuminant, cooking oil) wine and vinegar. Through the centuries, coconut became a cheap source of materials for the production of margarine, soap, and glycerin. Today, there are eight major export products from coconut. It is the number one agricultural commodity export of the Philippines, ranking fifth among the top ten exports of the country. From being a mere supplier of raw materials, the Philippines is now starting to be an exporter of finished products. Aside from the traditional products derived from it, it can provide sugar (sucrose), even more than that from sugar cane on a hectare per year basis. Despite the many hurdles the industry encountered, it remained resilient. Coconut oil has always been a premium oil. The quality it possesses has become the target of major R and Ds trying to mimic its properties.
