Moisture determination is the most critical factor when storing and processing seed and grain. The cheapest commercial grain moisture meter costs approximately $ 200 and is too expensive for most farmers and rice millers in developing countries. The Agricultural Engineering Unit of IRRI has developed a low cost resistance type moisture meter with an accuracy of +/- 1 %. The meter cost less than $ 30. Accuracy of the prototype has been compared with two other commercial moisture meters. Air-oven dry method was used as standard for moisture content determination of paddy. The prototype proved to be accurate in 12 % to 16 % moisture range (dry basis).
