A technology promotion strategy was conducted for the rice farmers in the Central Mindanao areas particularly in Pigcawan, Alamada, Libungan, Midsayap, and Aleosan (PALMA) in North Cotabato. Its objectives were to identify pests and natural enemies, to equip rice farmers with knowledge on the biology and characteristics of pests, to provide options for farmers in managing pests and encourage them to produce a better yield with lesser costs of inputs. A strategic planning with the Municipal Agriculturists and Department of Agriculture-Local Government Unit (DA-LGU) Agricultural Technicians of the five municipalities was done; five barangays [villages] in each municipality with the most prevalent problems on pests were also chosen. A team of rice experts from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and assisted by the DA-LGU Agricultural technicians visited the sites for consultations with the farmers. The rice black bug, stemborer, green leafhopper, rice tungro virus, bacterial leaf blight, rat and golden applesnail were the prevalent pests in the target barangays. Promotion of the various rice production technologies generated by PhilRice was included in the on-site consultations. Free information materials (pamphlets, posters, and rice techno magazine) and 1 kg seedkit were given to the rice farmers.
