Performance of mallard ducks fed with varying levels of banana (Musa sapientum) peel meal as substitution to corn

Three-week old ducklings were randomly distributed to five dietary treatments in three blocks following the Randomized Complete Block Design to evaluate the performance of mallard ducks fed varying levels, 40%, 30% and 20% of banana peel meal (BPM) as substitution to corn and compared with the performance of ducks fed the commercial and corn-soya basal diets. The inclusion of BPM in varying levels did not significantly affect the weight, gain and feed conversion of ducks but significantly influenced feed consumPtion and the cost of feed to produce a kg of duck. Ducks on 30% and 20% BPM, corn-soya and commercial diets had significantly better feed intake than those on the 40% BPM diet. Feed cost to produce a kg duck was comparable in diets with BPM and corn-soya but were significantly lower than feed cost of ducks fed with commercial ration and 40% BPM. The collection and processing of banana peel and its subsequent utilization at 30% level as energy feed substitute to corn for ducks and other poultry species offers a practical means of utilization of this waste material.
