Chemical element dynamics in decomposing pterocarpus indicus and swietenia macrophylla leaf litter

Mass losses and nutrient dynamics of large-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) and narra (Pterocarpus indicus Wild.) leaf litter were studied using the litterbag method. The loss of mass was extremely high during the first three months of field incubation (rainy season) due to leaching of liable and water soluble materials. The order of elemental mobility after 12 months for large-leaf mahogany was: CCaNKCuZnPMnFeAl. For narra, the mobility of the different nutrient elements that lost their nutrient mass in large-leaf mahogany were: C,Ca,N,K,Cu, and Zn, while those that increased were: Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, and P. For narra, the nutrient elements that lost their masses were C, Ca, N, K, Mg, Cu, P, and Zn, while those that increased were Al, Fe, and Mn. Three patterns of nutrient mobility were observed: first, the concentration increased while the nutrient mass decreased; second, both concentration and nutrient mass increased; and third, the concentration and nutrient mass decreased.
