Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporium fsp. cicris is one of the major constraints in the production of chickpea. With resistant and susceptible varieties of chickpea were analyzed for variation in Peroxidase (PRX) isoenzymes, as it is known to play role in resistance against infections. Sample of healthy and infected plants of susceptible and resistant varieties were analyzed to see difference in PRX isoenzymes profiles. Quantitative as well as qualitative differences in PR1 profile were observed in all the susceptible species. Enzyme activity increased in the leaves of susceptible varieties and a new locus was also expressed after infection. It was interesting to note that this locus, which expressed after infection in all the susceptible varieties, was present in the non- infected profiles of the resistant varieties. Probable role of this specific locus in the defense mechanisms against Fusarium wilt is discussed.
