Results of cattle's crossbreeding and mating in Poland in 1946-1997

The aim of the present paper is to analyse the results of cattle crossbreeding and mating in Poland for last 50 years, to highlight positive effects of crossbreeding and to emphasise unsuccessful actions to show the causes of failure. The paper shows full description of changes that has occurred within the area of main production traits: milk yield, the content of milk components, fattening and slaughtering quality and other traits important from the point of view of cattle production effectiveness. The paper covers examples of inapropriate actions and errors made while applying individual crossbreeding methods. The paper presents criteria ensuring effectiveness of different cattle crossbreeding methods and it separates the bull breeding line which has proved itself during execution of breeding programmes
