Thermohydrodynamic lubrication (THL) treats the influence of temperature on the hydrodynamic lubrication process, especially its influence on rheological properties of lubricant. Temperature field in a lubricant film is determined with a help of exact THL theory, simultaneously solving Reynolds equation, energy equation and heat transfer equations for the shaft and bearing under complex boundary conditions. A simpler way of involving heat into hydrodynamic lubrication theory is by means of effective or equivalent viscosity method, which is applied in the paper. The first step in the method is determination of viscosity-temperature functional dependence for some mineral oils by means of Vogel equation and the least square method. Further, effective viscosities for short bearings of the same slender, operating under different diametral clearance conditions and lubricated by different mineral oils are identified in the paper. By using calculated effective viscosity, bearing performances are determined.
