Combining abilities and mode of inheritance of yield and yield components in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.): [Doctoral dissertation]
2007
Hladni, N.
The line x tester analysis method was used to determine the mode of inheritance, gene effects, genetic variance components, combining abilities, and the average percentage contribution of lines, testers and their interactions to the expression of total leaf number per plant, total leaf area per plant, plant height, head diameter, seed yield per plant, total seed number per head, 1,000-seed weight, and seed oil content in the F1 generation in sunflower. The inbred A-lines, Rf-testers and F1 hybrids differed significantly in the mean values of all the trais studied. Analysis of variance of the combining abilities showed highly significant differences in GCA and SCA. The nonadditive component of genetic variance (dominance and epistasis) made a greater contribution to total genetic variance, as evidenced by the GCA/SCA ratio in the F1 generation, which was below the value of one with all the traits in both study years. The female A-lines had the highest average contribution to the expression of total leaf number per plant, total leaf area per plant, plant height, head diameter, seed yield per plant, 1,000-seed weight, and seed oil content. The contribution of the Rf-testers was greater in the expression of total seed number per head, while line x tester interaction was less significant. This study may be of significance for the development of new high-yielding sunflower hybrids using (cms) file male lines gained by interspecific hybridization.
