The process of intensification and specialisation in agriculture has accelarated the land erosion, pollution of water sources and has resulted in loss of biodiversity. A number of new threats is now emerging, caused by inadequate grazing and land abandonment. Many programs of past governments that supported amelioration, irrigation and land consolidation have had a large-scale impact on the development of agricultural production capacity and intensity of farming. However, a sharp decline in the nineties in the exploitation of resources in agriculture contributed to reduction of burden on environment. The process of EU accession has also brought about new challenges associated with the reformed Common Agricultural Policy, namely creating opportunities for farmers to sustain the quality of environment. Particular effort must be made in the implementation of codes of good agricultural practice, environmental consultanc, agri-environmental programmes, in maintaining mutual requests and supporting investments into environments, environment-friendly technology and animal welfare.
