In the European Union, alkaline waste waters mostly must be neutralized before discharge. Neutralization with carbon dioxide (CO2) is justifiably gaining importance as it has many advantages over the use of mineral acids. Messer has long-standing experience in neutralization with carbon dioxide and supplies carbon dioxide as well as hardware for waste water neutralization all over Europe. In this contribution we will focus on the calculation of average and maximum carbon dioxide demand in a specific neutralization plant. We will address the required data for engineering, data validation, calculation methods, and show two calculation examples from recent projects.
