The paper presents the results of a research conducted for three years (1999-2002) in Herceg Novi (Montenegro), the aim of which was to study the budding habits of certain kaki cultivars (Costat, Goshy and Triumph) cultivated in Diospyros lotus rootstock. The bud grafting was done in mid-May, with buds on the branches from the previous vegetation period. The buds were kept in a PVC bag, in a cold storage, at the temperature of 3 deg C. Another budding was done with the buds from the current vegetation, at the beginning of September. There were differences in the success rate of the buds initiation, as well as differences in the plants growth rate, depending on the budding time. The best acceptance rate for the buds was recorded on cv Costate (81.00%), with the budding performed in May, on activated buds, whereas cv Goshu recorded the lowest acceptance rate (66.50%), with budding performed on dormant buds. As for the growth rate, it was found to be bigger in plants developed from the rootstock in cultivars where the budding was performed on dormant buds, than in those whose budding was done in awakened buds. The two budding seasons of the Kaki grown from the Diospyros lotus rootstock showed the expected positive results. The May budding performed on the awakened bud from the previous vegetation, had better overall effects. This can be explained by a better circulation of the sap in the stock, as well as by the weaker physiological activity of grafting buds.
