Selection response in litter size for Large White pigs after introducing animal model in genetic evaluation

This paper provides the data obtained from pig performance testing and genetic evaluation of the Large White breed in Slovak pig breeding program which were used to analyze the genetic improvement of litter size traits from 1993 to 2003. The method M-BLUP animal model implemented in routine genetic evaluation in Slovakia since January 2000 helped to estimate the overall breeding values of pigs. The findings obtained support the assumption of positive influence of introducing BLUP and animal model in the routine genetic evaluation, especially for traits with low heritabilities.
