Non adoption of credit union cooperative in the upper northern part of Thailand

Objectives of this study were to study 1) factors affecting non adoption of joining Credit Union Cooperative, both in the on-going and outside areas of operation 2) operation problems of the cooperation 3) possibility of expanding Credit Union Cooperation work to cover all provinces in the upper northern part, i.e., Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phrae, Nan, Lampang and Maehongson. The study included 235 samples analyzed by Logit model The findings revealed that the factors affecting the refusal of the people in on-going area were 1) had already been members of the Bank for Agriculture and agricultural Co-operation (BAAC) 2) had sufficient loans from BAAC 3) uninformed about formation of credit union in their villages 4) questioning on trustworthy of chairman and committees of Credit Union Cooperative. Factors affected refusal of the people outside the operative area were 1) had a lot of total household expenditure per year 2) already had a saving account in a bank 3) being afraid that the money might be lost 4) lacking of advertisement of the foundation of the credit union 5) viewed that the credit union was not suitable in a village. The ratio of existed credit union cooperatives in the village of the northern 6 provinces was 3.22 percent. Therefore, there is an opportunity to expand the work of the credit union to cover the rest of 96.77 percent. It was recommended that the Credit Union Cooperative and Credit Union League of Thailand should allow for more public relations and so that better understanding of working principles of credit union can be achieved. Monitoring of credit union work should be done regularly to help solving the existing problems in the process by the staff from Credit Union League of Thailand. The existed members should pay more attention on joining the activities of the cooperative for their own benefits and to develop the organization.
