Effects of chloride on fruit acidity, fruit qualities, and yield of pineapple: [Final research report Kasetsart University research project fund fiscal year 2001: research code P-S 7.43]

Effects of chloride on growth, fruit acids content, fruit quality and yield of pineapple were investigated. The fertility of soil in the experimental plot was rather low. Some of the soil properties were as followed: OM=0.83 percent, available P and K=35 and 58 ppm, respectively. Growth of the pineapple plant during the first 6 months is slow. Average plant fresh weight at 6 months after planting was 940 g. The growth rate was 98.3 g/plant/month. The plant fresh weight increase rapidly to 2.34 kg/plant at 11.5 months after planting. During 6 to 11.5 months the growth rate was 244.0 g/plant/month. Average leaf N, P and K at 11 months were 1.59, 0.53, and 3.19 percent respectively. Different treatments of chloride during vegetative growths had no significant effect on leaf nutrients and average plant fresh weight. Forcing was done at 11.5 months after planting by application of 240 ppm ethephon in 1.5 percent urea solution 50 ml/plant twice at 3 day interval. The average percent plant flowering was 65 percent. Harvesting was started at 18 months after planting. Application of chloride 2.2 percent + urea 2.2 percent at 30 days + chloride 2.2 percent at 60 and 90 days after forcing significantly reduced fruits marbling disease to zero percent (P LT 0.01). Treatments of chloride did not have significant effects on average fruit weight and other fruit qualities. Average fruit weight was 1.24 kg, TSS and acid content were 16.0 degree Brix and 0.63 percent respectively.
