This experiment was conducted to determine the role of glucomannan in hypocholesterolemic effect in chicks fed 1 percent cholesterol. 8-day-old Arbor Acers (n=40) were fed diets with different levels of glucomannan (0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 percent) for 10 days. Supplementation of glucomannan significantly decreased concentration of plasma cholesterol, hepatic cholesterol, hepatic weight, average daily gain (ADG) and Feed conversion Ration (FCR), whereas it didnt show significant effect on breast meat cholesterol concentration. Supplementation of 3.0 and 4.5 percent glucomannan were effective in lowering concentrations of plasma cholesterol. The hepatic cholesterol was lower in every level of glucomannan supplementation (0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 percent respectively). Hepatic weight, ADG and FCR were significantly reduced in supplementation of 4.5 percent glucomannan compared with other treatments. Results of this work revealed that supplementation of glucomannan potentially have the hypocholesterolemic effect. However, it seems like to decrease broiler growth performance.
