Search for methods and criteria for rapid, accurate and cheap estimation of nutritive value of forages is of significance to farmers and specialists engaged in ruminant nutrition. This study is an attempt to determine and give a numerical expression to the stage of morphological development of sainfoin /Onobrychis Adans/ during primary growth. A scale with 11 described stages is suggested, which covers in details all stages of the morphological development of sainfoin primary growth. The mean stage of development of sainfoin from three pure stands in three different years is determined. Close correlation is found between the mean stage of development and the dry mass yield, content of crude protein, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin and pepsin-cellulase degradability of organic matter in sainfoin and appropriate regression equations are worked out. The conclusion is that the suggested scale for determination and numerical expression of the morphological stage of development is a methodological approach that can be used in studies for more accurate description of phenological development of sainfoin. The calculated relationships between the mean stage of development and the characteristics of composition and degradability substantiate its use in mathematical models as an easy way for practical purposes, to determine and predict sainfoin forage quality.
