[Respiration rate and its influence on storage results of pear varieties with various ripening terms in modified gas medium]

During two storage seasons, - 2005/2006 and 2006/2007, - the respiration rate of pear fruit at the start of storage and the relation between storage results in the modified gas media (MGM) and ripening terms of the cultivars were studied. Pear fruit varieties of different terms of ripening (Belorusskaya pozdnyaya, Desertnaya rossoshanskaya i Mramornaya were started at storage for experimentation realization. Maximum rapid stabilization of the respiration rate, whilst the correct conditions of media were maintained, was observed as the major condition for preservation of the yield. Whereas the respiration rate of fruit depended on the term of ripening. Pear cultivars with earlier ripening terms had a faster stabilizing gas compound in a closed space that sustained longer storage. Even though the respiration period was prolonged in the conditions of the MGM, the cultivars with late ripening had higher respiration rate, that in the long run results in the higher volume of the carbon dioxide emissions, stronger restriction of ripening and ageing processes, and, finally, in a longer shelf life
