[Blueberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.): problems and prospects]

Results of long-term complex research of various aspects of cultivation of blueberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) like valuable medicinal and food plant in conditions of the southern part of Belarus are presented. Ecological and biological features of growth and development of blueberries in artificial conditions (including territories with raised radioactive background as a result of Chernobyl Accident) are established. On their basis the rules of elements of agrotechniques of cultivation allowing to receive ecologically pure berries products are developed. Geographical regions wich are the most perspective for search of valuable forms with their purpose of the subsequent introduction are revealed. The orientation of process of selection improvement of the species is defined. As a result of long-term blueberries studying it is established that it can be considered as the object of practical plant growing under condition of breeding of competitive high grown varieties concerning to weeds and resistant to both diseases and pest of large-fruited varieties which are high yielding ones with early terms of ripening and are characterized by deep in root system spreading and spatial and structural discontinuity during all the life circle. Actuality of realization of selective research with methods of interspecific hybridization directed at creation of model objects with more extensive gene potential on the base of empirical selection of geographical and systematic remote initial material with V. vitis-idaea participation is underlined
