The biological importance of Ustilago zeae (Beskm.) Unger sori formation and teliospore structures (separate spore accumulation, mechanical spore accumulation - chits) in the process of germination and their viability preservation in intervegetational period is shown. For the first time the conditions and methods of the fungus hibernation in agrocoenosises are determined and also the influence of prevalent abiotic factors on teliospore germination. The dimorphism of germination of a certain proportion of teliospores by spore - mother - cells or the infectious hyphae is marked. The morphological forms of teliospore germination by typical 4 - cell basidia with interrelated basidia spores and separate basidia spores and also their size depending on hydrothermal conditions of germination are revealed. For the first time a primary source of vesicular corn smut infection in a form of the infected plant residues (teliospore chits in smut swellings) kept in the crop fields after hibernation is determined
