[Diet and habitat distribution of a weasel (Mustela nivalis) in natural complex Nalibokskaya Pushcha (test for selectivity)]

Research results of the radio tracking of two animal units of weasels (Mustela nivalis) for the investigation of their selectivity in populating different biotopes on the territory of the natural complex Nalibokskaya Pushcha in the Republic of Belarus were presented. The simultaneous study of weasel diets was realized. Research results revealed that forest biotopes (spruce and alder forests) and their ecotones between forests and open grass stands with open biotopes were the main habitats of the weasels. Both male and female weasels avoided pine forests. In course of the whole year the radiotracked weasels (both male and female) in most of the cases fed with Microtus voles. In accordance with the revealed structure of used biotopes and peculiar features of species composition of small rodents in different types of biotopes it was assumed that the analysed weasels procured Microtus voles on the ecotone areas and open biotopes. Bank voles being the predominant species among small rodents were also consumed but less than Microtus voles
