[Ecological and physiological evaluation of formaldehyde influence on the assimilation organs of woody plants]

Results of investigation of influence of formaldehyde on the physiological and biochemical indices of woody plants used for the landscape gardening of industrial urban territories in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus were presented. Ecological and physiological studies of 29 species and forms of indigenous and introduced woody plants showed the phytotoxic influence of formaldehyde on the content of photosynthetic pigments and water - soluble proteins and peroxydase activity. It was established that formaldehyde caused the changes in the content and concentration of photosynthetic pigment pools, chlorophyll a, b and carotinoids, lowered the protein content and increased the peroxidase activity in leaves of woody plants. There were indicated the following 3 groups of plant species according to their tolerance to formaldehyde: tolerant; average tolerant; low tolerant. In 19 studied trees and shrubs formaldehyde caused the peroxydase activity in leaves. At the same time, in 15 species the activity of peroxidase varied from 117,8% up to 1276,9% against the control variants; in 2 species the activity lowered. In the majority of cases formaldehyde determined the increasing of correlation of peroxidase and proteins. Plant species with high level of tolerance to formaldehyde were the most promising for the environment optimization
