Effect of organic matter and types of cover crops on soil phosphorus fractions

Low level of available P content is an important fertility problems of soil under cocoa plantation. An experiment to evaluate the effect of organic matter derived from temporary cover crops Mucuna pruriens in combination with permanent cover crops Arachis pintoi and Calopogonium caeruleum on changes of soil-P fractions was conducted at the Indonesia Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute in Jember, East Java. Organic matter was applied at 3 levels: 0, 1 and 2 kg dry organic matter/plot equivalent to 0, 5 and 10 ton/ha respectively. The organic matter was incubated for 3 months. The treatment of organic matter level was combined with types of permanent crops: without cover crop, cover crop of A. pintoi, and cover crop of C. caeruleum. The experiment was set up according to completely randomized design with 3 replications. At each plot was planted 20 cover crop cuttings and one cocoa seedling. Observation was carried out for 6 months since the establishment of cover crops. The result of the experiment showed that organic matter application at rates of 5 and 10 ton/ha significantly increased moderately labile in organic P but decreased labile inorganic P. Labile inorganic P decreased as the aggregate sizes smaller, meanwhile total P increased. Permanent cover crop of C. caeruleum significantly decreased labile organic P, while A. pintoi had no effect.
