The effect of epidural xylazine (@0.05 mg/kg), medetomidine (@15ug/kg), bupivacaine (@0.125 mg/kg) and combination of xylazine-bupivacaine and medetomidine-bupivacaine was observed on various haematobiochemical parameters in 10 buffalo calves. Nonsignificant reduction in Hb, PCV and TLC level was observed in all the groups of animals between 30 and 120 min as compared to the base value. Blood glucose showed a gradual and significant increase in all the groups of animals. However, the extent of hyperglycaemia was higher in the animals subjected to administration of xylazine and medetomidine alone or in combination with bupivacaine. A slight and nonsignificant decrease in total proteins, albumin, AG and increase in globulin was observed in all the treatment groups. A significant increase in BUN and creatinine was recorded in animals of all the groups. Significant increase in GGT was observed from 30 to 120 min post-injection in animals of groups A and B. The changes were, however, transient and values returned to base line quickly. The combination of xylazine/medetomidine with bupivacaine thus could be considered safe for caudal epidural analgesia in buffalo calves.
