Study on planting date effects on seed and oil yield in landrace and advanced safflower cultivars in dry land condition

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) has been planted in Iran for many years. Rain fed planting of safflower is possible in 3 ways: fall, entezari and spring planting. In order to determine the best time of safflower planting in dry land conditions this experiment was conducted in 2002-2004 with 5 lines and varieties in 3 planting date in North of Khorasan dryland research station at Shirvan. Experimental design was factorial base of randomized complete block design with 4 replications. In first year, analysis of variance showed that planting dates had significant difference in traits: stand, days to flowering and maturity, number of head per plant, plant heightand genotypes in traits: days to flowering, 1000- seed weight, number of seed per head, plant height, oil percentage and number of head per plant. Interactions between planting date and varieties were significant for stand and number of head per plant. Mean comparisons by duncans multiple ra nge test showed that entezari planting had the highest seed yield in both years. Also PI-537598 was cold tolerant and suitable for dry land fall planting. In second year, results showed that planting dates had significant difference in traits: stand, days to flowering and maturity, number of seed per head and grain yield and genotypes in traits: stand, days to flowering and maturity, , number of seed per head, 1000-seed weight and grain yield. Interactions between planting date and varieties were significant for number of seed per head, days to maturity and grain yield. Cold damage caused decrease of stand in fall planting. Combine analysis showed that 2-way interactions between planting date and varieties were significant for stand.
