Transfer of globe-shaped and smooth root traits from red-table and fodder beet to the sugar beet

The development of smooth root sugar beet without grooved roots started in 1998 by crossing between sugar beet × fodder beet and sugar beet × table beet. In 1998, the primary evaluation of fodder and red beet landraces were examined in karaj. Important characters like root shape, leaf shape, root color, chemical components, grooved roots, petiol color, and agronomic characteristis including root weight and sugar content were also compared between populations. Crosses were made between the selected ladraces and nuclear MS of O-types which resulted in segregation populations of sugar beet × fodder beet and sugar beet × red table beet. Selected roots of these generations were back crossed to sugar beet two generations and the subsequent F2 populations were examined for root shape, root smooth, sugar yield, root yield, sugar content and non-sugar components. The results showed that sugar content has been raised up to 17.5% with sugar extractability of 82%. In these populations, the frequency of smooth root architecture with globe-shaped and conical shaped roots has considerably increased in the improved generations. These materials are desirable for the identification of o-types as they have been back crossed to NMS O-types two generations. More researches shoulde be conducted on the selection of pollinators for high sugar and low sodium and potassium contents on the basis of individual roots and fanily lines.
