Epidemiological Feature Of Animal Echinococcosis / Hydatidosis In Uromia Of West Azarbaijan Province, Iran

In this study, an epidemiological survey on echinococcosis / hydatidosis was conducted in Urmia of West Azarbaijan province , Iran. Infection rate of echinococosis in stray dog as well as prevalence of hydatid cysts among sheep, buffaloes and cattle were determined. The fertility rates of different types and forms of cysts isolated from infected animals and the viability of protoscolices in fertile cysts also were measured. In this regard, 32 stray dogs, 5 red foxes, 4 golden jackals, 4483 sheep, 1265 cattle and 659 buffaloes were collected during three years (1997-2000). The caniides were collected either died freshly across the road or shot in the study area. Following autopsy of the animals, the small intestine removed and Echinococcus was collected. Meanwhile, sheep, buffaloes and cattle were examined for hydatid cyst infection at Urmia slaugtherhouse. Fertility rate of different types and forms of cysts isolated from infected animals and the viability of protoscolices were also determined using standard methods. Results indicated that, 12.5% of the dogs were infected with Echinococcus granulosus. 8.49% of the sheep, 12.65% of the cattle and 12.44% of the buffaloes were also found to be infected with hydatid cyst. In sheep, 48.82% of the cysts were found in lungs, 25.47% in liver and 25.72% in both liver and lungs. In cattle, 48.31% of the cysts were found in lungs, 29.77% in liver and 21.91% in both liver and lungs. In buffaloes, 36.58% of the cysts were found in lungs, 36.58% in liver and 26.84% in both liver and lungs. The cysts isolated from liver and lungs of the sheep showed higher fertility rate than the cysts of liver and lungs of cattle and buffaloes. In this regard, the fertility rates of cysts isolated from sheep , cattle and buffaloes were 37.6%, 22.04% and 2.52% respectively. The viability rate of protoscolices of the fertile cysts isolated from the slaughtered animals were found mostly higher than 80%.
