Preliminary evaluation of spineless safflower varieties / lines under rainfed conditions in spring planting in-cold areas of Iran.

To preliminary evaluate the agronomic characteristics of 20 safflower genotypes, a field experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replications under rainfed conditions in spring planting at the Khodabandeh-Zanjan and the Ghamlo-Kordistan stations during 2004-05. Analysis of variance showed that safflower genotypes were significantly different for all of the characteristics studied, except number of head per plant in Ghamlo station. Genotypes Arak local and Esfahan24 had the highest days to flowering and maturity in the both stations. The maximum no. of heads per plant belonged to genotypes 58-S6-58/11 and Darab4 in the Khodabandeh station. The maximum no. of seeds per head belonged to genotypes Darab7 and IL111 in the Khodabandeh station and Esfahan24 in the Ghamlo station. The highest 1000 seeds weight was related to Darab7 in the both stations. The highest seed yield belonged to genotypes 411 and Darab7 (1433 and 1175 Kg/ha, respectively) in the Khodabandeh station and Esfahan24, Almaneh, Darab7, and Syrian (488, 422, 403, and 413 Kg/ha, respectively) in the Ghamlo station. Combined analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences between two stations for all of the characteristics. Most of the characteristics affected positively, including plant height (14 cm), no. of heads per plant (5 ), no. of seeds per head (17), seed weight (3.5 gr), and seed yield (346 Kg/ha) in the Khodabandeh station, except day to flowering and maturity that were superior (7 and 3.5 days, respectively) in the Ghamlo station. Seed yield positively correlated with seed weight in the Khodabandeh station and no. of seeds/heads in the Ghamlo station .
