[Performance and adaptation to pen housing of a slow-growing local breed of rabbit]

The main objective of the present paper was to evaluate the effects of an alternative housing system in pens on the performances and productivity of a local breed of domestic rabbits compared to commercial hybrid subjects normally used in intensive rabbitries. One hundred and six rabbits, 39 days old, were divided according to breed and sex in two different housing systems, i.e. in two place cages (cm 40 x 30 x 28 h) or in wire mesh floor pens (cm 100 x 100 x 70 h) of 13 subjects each. All the animals were fed, ad libitum, a pelleted commercial feed and slaughtered when they reached the same live weight (2.46 kg +- 0.27 kg) (71 and 85 days for commercial and rustic breed, respectively). Performances were generally worst for group housed rabbits compared to the ones of rabbits intensively bred in cages. Particularly, feed efficiency was significantly higher (P=0.03), dressing out percentage better (61.4% vs 59.5%) and muscle to bone ratio improved (6.8 vs 5.8) for animals traditionally caged. Concerning genetic strain, local breed had a higher dressing out percentage (62.0% vs 57.9%), a lower meat brightness (L*) and a higher weight of the left hind leg (207.4 g vs 184.6 g). Also mortality rate as well as intestinal diseases seem to be less important in the pen housed local breed group

Sono state valutate la produttività e l'adattabilità di una popolazione di conigli rustici all'allevamento in colonia, confrontandole con quelle di conigli ibridi commerciali caratterizzati da elevata velocità di accrescimento. 106 conigli, svezzati a 39 giorni, sono stati ripartiti omogeneamente nelle tesi sperimentali, in funzione di sesso, peso vivo e linea genetica. Gli animali, alloggiati in gabbie a due posti (cm 40 x 30 x 28h) o in box collettivi su fondo di rete (cm 100 x 100 x 70h), sono stati alimentati ad libitum e macellati allo stesso peso vivo (2.457 g +- 268 g) (71 o 85 giorni di vita per gli ibridi commerciali e i rustici, rispettivamente). Nel corso della prova si è valutato lo stato sanitario, i parametri produttivi in vita e quelli di macellazione, il rapporto M/O del taglio campione e alcune caratteristiche fisiche, chimiche e organolettiche delle carni (pH, perdite di gocciolamento e cottura, composizione, colore). La stabulazione in parchetti collettivi non ha consentito le stesse prestazioni produttive osservate nei conigli alloggiati nelle gabbie bicellulari. Infatti, questi ultimi hanno manifestato risultati complessivamente superiori, con migliore efficienza alimentare (P=0,03), rese più elevate (61,4% vs 59,5%; P=0,04) e rapporto M/O del taglio campione più favorevole (6,8 vs 5,8; P=0,01). I conigli della popolazione Grigia rustica locale hanno fatto registrare risultati produttivi apprezzabili, sebbene inferiori a quelli degli ibridi commerciali, con rese più elevate (62,0% vs 57,9%; P0,01), maggior peso del taglio campione (207,4 g vs 184,6 g; P
