The role of cattle and other ruminants in the epidemiology of verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli infections

Английский. In this review, the features of verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) were studied, in particular those regarding the microorganism virulence factors. The distribution of different serogroups/serotypes in human infections and animal reservoirs was also discussed. Nevertheless, the major goal of the review was the role of the animals as VTEC reservoirs: cattle in particular, but also buffaloes, sheep, goats and wild ruminants. The AA report the results of several international studies, but focused mainly on Italian epidemiological surveys. Apart from the animals, the role of foodstuffs of animal origin in the transmission of VTEC strains to humans was investigated

La presente review illustra le caratteristiche degli stipiti di Escherichia coli produttori di verocitotossine (VTEC), in particolare per quanto riguarda i fattori di virulenza, e indica i sierogruppi/sierotipi prevalenti sia nelle infezioni umane, sia negli animali serbatoio. In particolare, si affronta il tema degli animali che fungono da reservoir di tali microrganismi, il bovino in particolare, ma anche il bufalo, la pecora, la capra e i ruminanti selvatici, mettendo in risalto soprattutto i risultati degli studi epidemiologici eseguiti in Italia. Accanto al ruolo dell'animale, è anche evidenziato il ruolo degli alimenti, da esso derivati, che hanno dato prova di poter veicolare all'uomo stipiti VTEC O157 e non-O157
