Growth curves in roe deer population of Massa-Carrara province [Toscana]

The aim of the study was to describe the weight (total and eviscerated) and the growth patterns of roe deer population in Northern Tuscany (Massa-Carrara province) by ANOVA and through the application of a growth model (Gompertz equation) on the data collected from animals slaughtered during the selective hunting period in 3 different hunting districts (1, 2 and 3), between 1997 and 2005. ANOVA evidenced significantly higher weights (total and eviscerated) in males, considering animals of adult age. Sexual dimorphism is minimized at extreme ages: in young animals before 2nd year and in old animals over 8th year. Significant differences were also found among districts and between sexes concerning growth parameters, obtained from Gompertz equation (maturity weight, growth rate, age of maximum growth). The whole sample of 1,014 animals (469 males, 432 females and 113 with undetermined sex) showed a mean value of maturity total weight of kg 23.459 +- 0.114 and a maturity eviscerated weight of kg 17.768 +- 0.103. The highest maturity weights, total and eviscerated, were recorded in district 2 (respectively kg 23.944 and kg 18.171) and the lowest maturity weights in district 1 (respectively kg 23.046 and kg 17.407). With reference to sex, males showed a higher maturity weight, total and eviscerated, than females, by respectively 13.67 and 15.40. Females grew faster than males and they were more precocious. In conclusion, the research was able to describe the growth as a continuous phenomenon, taking into account the different sources of variation. If applied periodically to the population reared on a certain area, this procedure will be able to explain differences among years, so contributing to a better management

Lo scopo del lavoro era descrivere il peso (totale ed eviscerato) e le modalità di accrescimento della popolazione di capriolo della provincia di Massa-Carrara tramite l'analisi della varianza e l'applicazione di un modello di crescita (equazione di Gompertz) ai dati raccolti dagli animali abbattuti durante la caccia di selezione in tre diversi distretti (1, 2 e 3), fra il 1997 e il 2005. L'analisi della varianza ha evidenziato pesi (totali ed eviscerati) significativamente superiori nei maschi, considerando gli animali adulti. Il dimorfismo sessuale è invece attenuato alle età estreme: negli animali sotto ai due anni di età e in quelli oltre l'ottavo. Anche i parametri ottenuti dall'equazione di Gompertz (peso alla maturità, velocità di crescita, età di massima crescita) hanno mostrato differenze significative in funzione del sesso e del distretto. I 1.014 animali del campione (469 maschi, 432 femmine e 113 di sesso indeterminato) hanno mostrato un peso totale medio alla maturità di kg 23,459 +- 0,114 e un peso eviscerato medio alla maturità di kg 17,768 +- 0,103. I pesi maggiori alla maturità, totali ed eviscerati, sono stati evidenziati nel distretto 2 (rispettivamente kg 23,046 e 17,407). Con riferimento al sesso, i maschi hanno mostrato maggior peso, totale ed eviscerato, alla maturità rispettivamente per il 13,67 e per il 15,40. Le femmine hanno messo in evidenza un accrescimento più rapido e una maggiore precocità. In conclusione, la ricerca è stata in grado di descrivere la crescita come un processo continuo, prendendo in considerazione le diverse fonti di variazione. Se applicata sistematicamente alla popolazione presente in una certa area, questa procedura può rendere evidenti differenze in anni successivi, contribuendo alla gestione faunistica del capriolo
