[Biometric measurement of Thoroughbred and Italian Trotter breed foals [Emilia-Romagna]]

A preliminary survey was carried out in stud farms of Thoroughbred (PSI) and Italian Trotter in the Emilia Romagna region, with the aim to investigate the muscle and bone development of foals throughout the first 18 months of age. The following measures were taken: wither height; hip height; body length; hearth girth; cannon bone girth; body weight. 45 PSI (24 colts and 21 fillies) and 77 Trotters (41 colts and 36 fillies) were measured. Body weights and withers heights in the first month of life of PSI are lower than the ones found in an American study about PSI foals bred in Kentucky, but similar to the ones recorded in another study regarding PSI bred in Florida. Until 18 months of age, no significant difference was found between colts and fillies of the same breed regarding withers height and hearth girth. Trotters are taller than PSI in the first month of life and during the period from 6 to 12 months of age. In the first month of life Trotters show also a wider hearth girth

Questo lavoro rappresenta un'indagine preliminare in alcuni allevamenti di cavalli di razza Purosangue Inglese e Trottatore Italiano, siti in Emilia Romagna, relativamente al rilievo delle seguenti misurazioni biometriche, necessarie per poter valutare lo sviluppo muscolare e scheletrico dei puledri durante i primi 18 mesi di età: altezza al garrese; altezza della groppa; lunghezza del tronco; circonferenza del torace; circonferenza dello stinco; peso. Sono stati misurati 45 soggetti di razza PSI (24 maschi e 21 femmine) e 77 di razza Trottatore Italiano (41 maschi e 36 femmine). I pesi e le altezze al garrese rilevati nel primo mese di vita dei Purosangue Inglesi (PSI) risultano inferiori rispetto a quelli rilevati in uno studio americano riguardo a puledri PSI allevati nel Kentucky e simili a quelli rilevati in puledri allevati in Florida. Considerando l'altezza al garrese e la circonferenza toracica, non risultano differenze significative, nell'ambito della stessa razza, fra i maschi e le femmine, fino all'età di 18 mesi. Riguardo alle differenze fra le due razze, i Trottatori maschi e femmine risultano significativamente più alti dei Purosangue nel primo mese di vita, così come nel periodo da 6 mesi a un anno di età. I Trottatori hanno anche una maggiore circonferenza toracica rispetto ai PSI nel primo mese di vita
