Among the various aims of the protect lands, as expressed by the Article 1 of the Italian Law no. 394/91, there is the promotion of educational, formative, experimental and interdisciplinary activities, as well as recreational activities. Considering the multiplicity of the protect areas functions as well as the interests and the problems involved in their management, the most suitable research in this field is the one characterized by a systemic approach. It concerns the study of the most high hierarchical levels: agricultural, farming and agro-territorial levels. The researches regard not only the environmental sustainability of crop production, including the control of erosion risks and the management of pasture areas, but also other aspects that result less conventional than the classical questions of agronomy. They include land planning, productions of local and typical markets, production dependent on organic farming, environmental preservation, management of areas which result of particular interest for wild fauna, renaturalization of degraded areas, eco-sustainable management of water resources, multifunctional agriculture, landscape improvement and biodiversity enhancement

Una delle finalità che motivano l'esistenza delle aree protette, espressa dall'Articolo 1 della Legge 394/91, riguarda la promozione di attività di educazione, formazione e ricerca, anche interdisciplinare, nonché attività ricreative compatibili. Considerando le molteplicità delle funzioni, le problematiche e gli interessi collegati alla gestione delle aree protette, la ricerca che più si adatta in queste aree è quella di tipo sistemico, inerente lo studio dei sistemi afferenti ai livelli gerarchici più elevati: colturali, aziendali e agro-territoriali. Le ricerche riguardano, oltre agli aspetti ritenuti classici per l'agronomia, la sostenibilità ambientale delle produzioni vegetali, il contenimento del rischio di erosione, la gestione delle aree pascolative, anche altri aspetti meno convenzionali quali la pianificazione del territorio, le produzioni tipiche e biologiche, la gestione delle aree pascolative e delle superfici di particolare interesse faunistico, la rinaturalizzazione di aree degradate, la gestione ecosostenibile delle acque delle aree interne, la multifunzionalità dell'agricoltura, il miglioramento del paesaggio e la valorizzazione della biodiversità
