Water stress and harmful insects in agro-forest ecosystems

Present knowledge on ecological services supplied by insects to natural terrestrial ecosystems allow us to identify many homeostatic mechanisms regulating biological balance as well as life perpetuation of the said ecosystems; at the same time, this knowledge represents a sound referring point to understand how these mechanisms do work so as to manage them in the anthropized ecosystems (i.e., agriculture and forests) and especially in order to identify in the latter the natural meaning of the so called insect outbreaks, so as to forecast and possibly prevent them, as well as, when needed, to conceive and formulate efficient control strategies having minimal environmental impact. Water factor is crucial with genesis, configuration and conservation of a terrestrial ecosystem (both natural or anthropized) as a whole or in its individual components, but especially concerning plant life as well as plant interactions with phytophagous invertebrates, mainly insects. Insect-plant trophic interactions are principally influenced by the water conditions in the ecosystem and the impact of phytophagous insects on crops is markedly affected. Extremely severe water stress, especially if prolonged, prevents insect life just like plant life, but a moderate and not so prolonged water stress, while depressing plant vigour, paradoxically can improve development and multiplication of phytophagous arthropods, with severe consequences on woody plants especially and forest trees markedly

Le attuali conoscenze sul ruolo (servizi ecologici) dell'entomofauna negli ecosistemi naturali terrestri consentono di identificare molti dei meccanismi omeostatici che regolano l'equilibrio biologico e la continuità di vita di detti ecosistemi e altresì rappresentano un riferimento sicuro per capire il funzionamento degli stessi meccanismi, onde poterli gestire negli ecosistemi antropizzati (agrari e forestali) e, in particolare, per individuare in questi ultimi il significato naturale delle cosiddette infestazioni distruttive (outbreaks) di insetti fitofagi, al fine di poterle prevedere e possibilmente prevenire, nonché per escogitare e mettere a punto all'occorrenza strategie efficaci d'intervento con impatto ambientale minimo. Il fattore acqua, come si sa, ha un ruolo determinante nella genesi, configurazione e conservazione di un ecosistema terrestre (naturale o antropizzato), nell'insieme e nelle singole componenti, ma specialmente in relazione alla vita delle piante e alle interazioni di queste con gli invertebrati fitofagi, principalmente insetti. Sono soprattutto le interazioni trofiche insetti-piante che vengono profondamente influenzate dal regime idrico dell'ecosistema e, in particolare, l'impatto degli insetti fitofagi sulle piante coltivate. Condizioni estreme di carenza idrica, specialmente se prolungata, ostacolano lo sviluppo degli insetti parallelamente a quello delle piante ospiti, ma uno stress idrico meno grave e non tanto prolungato, mentre deprime il vigore vegetativo delle piante, può favorire paradossalmente lo sviluppo e la moltiplicazione degli artropodi fitofagi, con gravi conseguenze specialmente sulle piante arboree e soprattutto su quelle forestali
