Английский. The Italian version of the paper of the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Willem Beijerinck, published in 1898 in German version and in 1942 in English version, is presented. In his paper, Beijerinck elaborated the new concept of soluble virus in contraposition to the Pasteur's view that considered the viruses as cellular microbes. Notwithstanding the scanty technical possibilities of the microbiology of that period, Beijerinck was able to demonstrate that the agent of the tobacco mosaic disease could not be a real microbe and that its multiplication requires a metabolic activity of the infected cells. He advanced the hypothesis that many plant diseases whose aetiology was still unknown might be produced by similar viruses. For these reasons, Beijerinck is considered the father of modern virology
