Resistance of temperately adapted tropical inbred lines and testcrosses to three important maize pathogens [Zea mays L.]

Английский. Tropical maize (Zea mays L.) has been shown to be an excellent source of disease resistance and genetic diversity to enhance the germplasm base of USA maize. The objectives of this study were to compare the performance of temperately-adapted inbred lines and testcrosses, derived from the tropical maize population TROPHY, to temperate checks for resistance to gray leaf spot (causal organism Cercospora zeae-maydis Tehon et Daniels), Southern corn leaf blight [causal organism Bipolaris maydis (Nisik.) Shoemaker], and Northern corn leaf blight [causal organism Exserohilum turcicum (Pass.) Leonard et Suggs]. Two-hundred and sixteen temperately-adapted S4 lines were derived from Cycle 9 of undergoing recurrent phenotypic selection for reduced grain moisture at harvest and were testcrossed to the temperate hybrid B73Ht x Mo17Ht. Selected subsets of these C9S4 testcrosses and their corresponding C9S5 lines were screened for disease resistance and compared to temperate checks. Results indicated that many TROPHY-Low-Moisture Cycle 9 S5 lines compared favourably, as inbred lines per se and in testcross combination with B73Ht x Mo17Ht, to the checks. These inbreds are a divergent source of disease resistance that can be easily incorporated into an applied corn breeding program

Duecentosedici linee S4 adattate agli ambienti temperati sono state ottenute dal Ciclo 9 di selezione fenotipica ricorrente per umidità ridotta della granella alla raccolta e sono state incrociate con l'ibrido temperato B73Ht x Mo117Ht. Sottogruppi scelti di questi testcross C9S4 e le loro linee corrispondenti C9S5 sono stati valutati in rapporto alla resistenza alle malattie e confrontate con controlli temperati. I risultati hanno indicato che molte linee TROPHY-Bassa-Umidità Ciclo 9 S5 mostravano un comportamento favorevole rispetto ai controlli, sia come linee consanguinee in sé, sia in combinazione testcross con B73Ht x Mo17Ht.
