Expeditious methodology for the classification of the land-use on a wide forest area [Latium]

This research intended to test and set up an expeditious methodology for the classification of land, paying particular attention to the forest land, through some surveys extracted from satellite images provided by LANDSAT-7 with sensor Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). The method proposed in this paper is the same used for the supervised classification, through an hard logic classifier. The area where the research took place is the Monti Lepini chain, South of Rome, an habitat which presents mountain orographic characteristics typical of forest realities in the Centre of Italy. With the aim to examine more closely the techniques used for the minimization of the error due to the territorial topography, the Monti Lepini area was chosen for its heterogeneity of forest species. In order to constitute a data set, some land surveys were carried out on the basis of data provided by the supervised classification. The data set was divided between training-sites (60 of the area), from which the spectrums were taken out and processed through the GIS, and test-sites (40 of the area), which were used in a matrix (Kappa Index of Agreement), in order to test the reliability of thematic maps obtained from the surveys. Each class of land-use was characterised by the spectrum signatures and the classification of small sampled areas was extended, through a classifier (MAXLIKE), to the whole portion of land represented in the satellite image. These results allowed us to isolate the spectrum signatures of two forest species: the holm oak (Quercus ilex) and beech (Fagus sylvatica)

[Questa ricerca aveva lo scopo di mettere a punto e verificare una metodologia speditiva finalizzata alla classificazione del territorio, con particolare attenzione a quello di natura forestale, tramite indagini effettuate con la supervisione di immagini satellitari fornite da LANDSAT-7 con il sensore Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). La metodologia proposta si basa sulla classificazione di immagini satellitari elaborate secondo la modalità prevista dalla supervised classification, attraverso un classificatore di logica hard. L'area di studio è la catena dei Monti Lepini, a Sud di Roma, ambiente che presenta caratteristiche orografiche montane tipiche delle realtà forestali dell'Italia Centrale. L'area dei Monti Lepini è stata scelta per la sua eterogeneità dal punto di vista delle specie forestali presenti, allo scopo di testare più approfonditamente le tecniche utilizzate per la minimizzazione dell'errore dovuto alla topografia territoriale. Allo scopo di predisporre un insieme di dati, sono state effettuate alcune rilevazioni sul terreno sulla base dei dati forniti dalla supervised classification. Il data set è stato suddiviso fra una parte da impiegare per la classificazione delle immagini (training-sites, 60 dell'area), da cui sono stati tratti gli spettri, elaborati mediante il GIS, e una per la verifica delle carte tematiche (test-sites, 40 dell'area), utilizzata in una matrice (KIA, indice Kappa di corrispondenza), allo scopo di verificare l'affidabilità delle mappe tematiche ottenute dalle indagini. Ogni classe di uso del suolo è stata caratterizzata in base alle risposte spettrali e la classificazione di piccole aree effettivamente campionate è stata estesa, attraverso un classificatore (MAXLIKE), all'intera porzione di territorio rappresentata nell'immagine satellitare. Questi risultati ci hanno consentito di isolare le risposte spettrali di due specie forestali: il leccio (Quercus ilex) e il faggio (Fagus sylvatica).]
