The aims and objectives of organic cultivation are to produce high-quality foods which are free of artificial and health-damaging pesticide residues, to build up and maintain high soil fertility, to maintain natural cycles and processes that are closed as is feasible, to promote and conserve biodiversity and to work without the use of synthetic aids and ingredients, or genetically modified organisms and their derivates. Fertilizer use can only be one of many measures in establishing trees that are physiologically balanced and yield top-quality fruits. In order to provide the trees with sufficient nutrients, the fertilizing programme followed by the organic fruit grower strives primarily to support soil fertility in a holistic manner. Statements on tree nutrition in organic fruit production cannot be separated from aspects of site requirements and soil preparation before planting, soil management and weed control and choice of rootstock

La fertilizzazione è uno dei mezzi per ottenere alberi in equilibrio fisiologico e frutti di elevata qualità. La nutrizione in frutticoltura biologica non può infatti prescindere dagli aspetti relativi alle caratteristiche del sito e alla preparazione del suolo prima dell'impianto, dalla gestione del suolo, dal controllo delle malerbe e dalla scelta del portinnesto. Risultano infatti molto importanti la costituzione e la conservazione di un elevato livello di fertilità del suolo, il mantenimento di cicli e processi naturali quanto più possibile chiusi, la promozione e conservazione della biodiversità
