Variety, a word with many meanings [plants]

Английский. The term variety is nowadays linked to several adjectives in relation to the different biological, economic and juridical purposes. The terminology adopted is sometime inappropriate and not correct because the terms used are not suitable for the different situations or are not used univocally. The aim of the article is to list the different cases when the word variety is reported: among several situations, confined mainly to the Italian terminology, the definitions of cultivar, landrace, improved variety, conservation variety, umbrella variety, derived variety, traditional variety, genetically modified variety, protected variety and essentially derived variety are reported. Particular emphasis is given to the aspects of variety conservation and to the problems related to the protection of genetic resources naturally adapted to local regional conditions and threatened by genetic erosion

[Il termine varietà viene oggi utilizzato in molti modi che hanno fondamento biologico, economico e normativo, ma che non sempre risultano chiari e usati in modo univoco. Lo scopo di questo contributo consiste nell'esame dei casi in cui viene utilizzato il termine varietà: fra le differenti accezioni, limitate principalmente alla terminologia italiana, sono riportate le definizioni di cultivar, varietà autoctona, varietà da conservazione, varietà ombrello, varietà derivata, varietà tradizionale, varietà geneticamente modificata, varietà protetta e varietà essenzialmente derivata. Sono sottolineati particolarmente gli aspetti relativi alla conservazione delle varietà e ai problemi connessi alla tutela delle risorse genetiche adattate a condizioni regionali locali e minacciate dall'erosione genetica.]
