The model experiment was conducted to improve the drying yield of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) lumber. For this purpose, green sugi lamina was sorted into two groups based on the heartwood color (red or black) and heartwood ratio in a sawmilling factory. Each group of lamina was kiln dried with the respective optimum drying schedule. Results obtained are as follows: (1) Green lumber sorting produced the increase of appearance ratio of dried lamina with moisture content level below 20 % which meets with the mill standard in this factory. (2) Thus, drying yield of lamina could be improved by 3 % by the green lumber sorting. (3) There was no significant difference in bow, crook and cup of lamina between the two groups.
