The possibility of producing exterior boards made from the sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) chip elements which were prepared by the water vapor explosion process was investigated to encourage effective use of wood waste. The single- and three-layer boards, which had high density (0.7-1.1 g/cubic cm) and high resin content (30 %), were produced to withstand use in external environments. As a result, the fundamental properties of single-layer boards were superior to those of three-layer boards. Decay resistance of single-layer boards was high, especially at high density (1.1 g/cubic cm). However, in the case of three-layer boards, it was necessary to improve the decay resistance and reduce the thickness swelling.
