The total factor productivity analysis of wheat [Triticum aestivum] peasant farms in the north region of the Republic of Kazakhstan

This paper aims to show the dynamic change in private farm sizes after independence, and the economic reason to enlarge farm sizes in the north region of Republic of Kazakhstan. Private farms were newly established after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Many farm sizes were enlarged after independence. Using data gathered from a field survey conducted in 2006, I showed the economic incentives to enlarge their farm sizes. I found obvious existence of economics of scale in their wheat production, using the total factor productivity analysis. TFP analysis also showed that agricultural machinery and labor input mostly contributes to the increase of farm efficiency. From this result, it can be concluded that large sized farms will continuously be the main wheat producers in the country. For their further development, however, it is necessary to renew their agricultural machineries produced in Soviet Era.
