The municipal agency titled 'The Riga Energy Agency' is being created with the assistance and 50% co-financing of the European Union. During early 2006, the Municipal Services Department of the Riga City Council prepared and submitted an application to the Intelligent Energy - Europe call for proposals of the COOPENER programme and was awarded a grant. In accordance with EU requirements, at least three co-operation partners from different European countries shall set up a consortium for project implementation. The Riga Energy Agency (REA) is an independently operating non-profit institution, established by the municipality with the aim of ensuring the fulfilment of its functions. The principal objectives of the Riga Energy Agency (REA) are as follows: 1) management and co-ordination of energy supply and energy efficiency in the Riga municipality area; 2) provision of information to the public on issues concerning energy efficiency increase.
