The application of renewable energy resources for energy production becomes increasingly urgent worldwide. Fast pyrolysis is one of the prospective trends of obtaining liquid fuel from solid biomass. The aim of the present study was to investigate the yield, chemical composition, physical properties and water content of hardwood and softwood bio-oils depending on the pyrolysis and drying conditions in an ablation type reactor. The composition and properties of the products of fast pyrolysis of hardwood and softwood obtained in a two-chamber (drying and pyrolytic) ablation type reactor in the temperature range 450-600 deg C were investigated. Optimum parameters of the drying conditions and the temperature of the pyrolysis of wood, at which the bio-oil yield exceeds more than 60%, and its calorific value makes up 17-20 MJ/kg and 18-23 MJ/kg for hardwood and softwood, respectively, have been determined.
