Three bamboo species, namely kawayan tinik (Bambusa blumeana J.A. and J.H. Schultes, bayog (Bambusa sp.), and giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper (Schultes f.) Backer ex Heyne) were planted to rehabilitate the mine tailings pond No. 1 of Philex Mining Corporation in Padcal, Tuba, Benguet. The project started on November 2000 and ended in 2005. Survival, growth performance and number of culms were observed. Planting techniques, plantation maintenance, as well as costs during the conduct of the project were also observed. Results shows high survival rates for kawayan tinik and bayog with 99% and 97% respectively five years after planting. Giant bamboo showed low survival with 72%. The mean height and diameter growth of kawayan tinik are 6.81 m and 3.11 cm, respectively, while bayog showed 5.71 m (height) and 2.54 cm (diameter). Giant bamboo showed slow growth with a mean height of 2.72 m and 1.45 cm for mean diameter. The mean number of culms observed are seven for kawayan tinik and eight for bayog, while giant bamboo showed four after five years from planting.
