Bioremediation of mining areas with the use of plants

This paper is focused on the role of appropriate plants and trees in adverse site amelioration and aimed to present bioremediation as an environmental technology applied to Marinduque Mining Corporation (Marcopper) in the rehabilitation of Calancan Bay which had been affected by its mine tailings. It was estimated that close to 113 million MT of tailings and wastes had been discharged into the bay from 1975 to 1986 covering about 45-50 sq km or about 4500-ha. Such volume of hazardous wastes had grossly affected coastal resources in its entirety and it is not remote that these could also reach and affect human health through the food chain. Due to the failure of Marcopper to provide satisfactory solutions, a multisectoral technical group was created to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach for marine rehabilitation to causeways were also identified and used as base and additional information in providing a scheme that eventually solved the problem.
