A checklist and bibliography of the recorded acarine fauna from the Philippines are presented, covering the period 1844 and to 2005. The list includes a total of 1210 species classified under 498 genera, 159 families, 62 super families and 5 suborders of the subclass Acari. Island distribution is compiled for each species, with Luzon, the biggest and best studied island, having the highest number of recorded species (670), followed by Mindanao with 375 and Leyte with 312. Of the recorded species, 607 or 50.2 percent are known thus far to occur only in the Philippines. The best known groups are the predatory families Phytoseiidae, Cunaxidae and Cheyletidae with 108, 57 and 55 known species, respectively, as well as the parasitic Trombiculoidea with 86 species, followed by the soil mites consisting of the entire suborder Oribatida with 333 species, and the family Otocepheidae alone with 69 species. A historical account of contributions by local and foreign acarologists to studies on various groups is given, from the very first records of three ticks in 1844 by the German zoologist, C.L. Koch, to the present.
