Prospect of suppressing the increase in Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee) population resistant to Bt corn through field releases of males reared on non-Bt corn

The current Asian cornborer (ACB) resistance management recommendation in Bt corn relies mainly on the use of high dose Bt toxin and the planting of 20 percent structured refuge. However, there are several apprehensions regarding this refuge system: assumptions are mostly based on the European corn borer, most farmers do not want to plant the 20 percent non-Bt refuge since this will just be damaged by ACB, asynchronous emergence of resistant and susceptible individuals, adults coming from weed hosts and other non-preferred crop hosts may not be reliable sources of Bt-susceptible individuals, and larger time needed to plant refuge leads directly to increase in labor cost. An alternative means of delaying increase in population of ACB resistant to Bt corn is being proposed, which is the release of Bt-susceptible males (Bt-SM). This involves periodic releases of Bt-SM that will mate with resistant females. The success of this method will depend on efficient mass rearing of ACB, male collection and transport of large colonies of males, and timely release of the Bt-SM in the corn field. The excess virgin females produced during ACB mass rearing can be used for trapping to attract the resistant males in the field thereby reducing their population. Consequently, this will reduce the population of susceptible males needed for release. Preliminary studies on release strategies, cost of rearing and field releases need to be undertaken. Likewise, the economics of the 80:20 refuge and releases of Bt-SM should be compared.
